Pichler /The World Models

wing span:

920 mm

lenght:

830 mm

weigth emty:

560 g

weight complete:

740 g

edf:

1 * 62 mm (outrunner!)

material

Holz

type

ARF

included

Modell, 1 Impeller, 1 Brushless Motor

thrust:

590g bei 10,8Volt 32 Ampere 34.000 U/min

First impression:

The box, in which the kit arrives, looks rather small, it measures only 86cm*25*15 cm.  misst er. The carton has two layers separated by board and holds the parts well fixed.

What about the small parts?
The small parts are completely pakced in numbered bags and the partslist is to be find in the manual. There is an additional small carton for the edf.

Accessories used for completion
1 esc Pichler XC-30 Amps
4 Servos Conrad TS12
1 Polyquest 2000XQ 3S1P Lipo batterie
1 Futaba receiver R608FS

What is left to do?
All control surfaces have to be glued. The motor has to be build into the edf and the edf to the fuselage. The required 4 servos need to be installed. Well made the aileron-mountings for screw-in which can be reopened. (Similar planes use glue in fixing). As well made are the linkages to elevator und rudder. All positions for linkage hardware is exactly marked and overall preciosion is good.

To complete the plane for flight one will need an receiver with (at least) 5 channels (2* ailerons 1* elevator 1* Rudder and 1* esc).
The transmitter does not need mixers nor aileron differential setting due to the symmetrical profile of the wing. Very useful is exponential-setting to 30%.

The flightbatterie
You will need a 3 cell lipo batterie with 2000 to 2100 mAh and 3,5mm goldplugs. Please pay attention to the load rating. The powerful edf  will draw 32 amps at 10,8 volts. The choosen batterie must deliver this to have a good launching. Batteries with 2100mAh and 15C rating should work well.

The brushles ESC
Even though current consumption will fall below 30 Amps in flight a 30-amp-esc could be overstrained. The used Pichler XC-30 however works trouble-free.

Take off:
The plane can be ground started by its landing-gear. Due to its delicate nose wheel it has to be rather smooth. Maybe a larger nose wheel could be helpful for rougher terrains.
Alternatively one can do without the gear and hand launch the plane. Logically first by a routined launcher. Some few steps and leveled launching and the unijet is airborne and shows no Edf-typically plunge-down. It accelerates fast and gains height.

Flight:
The Unijet is to be content with 3/4-power and has good climb rates at full power for upward maneuvers. The Silhoutte is pleasently different from competitiors. Large cabin and adequate pilots contributes the appearance. Very pleasant and a 'must' for a trainer: two-coloured wing-design for attitude recognition. After One two rounds for fine trimming there is nothing missing for jet type flying due to powerful edf and effective control-surfaces.

Landing:
As many other edf-jets the Unijet is easy to land. On the end of approach one pulls the elevator more and more and gets a very smooth touch down.

Impression:
THe Unijet is been made of lasered woodparts and covered by multicolored film. This gives a low weight and allows the special fuselage outline.
On the other hand the Unijet is more sensitive than "foamies" and therefore it is recommend for those intermediate model pilots whith assured landing skills to enter the world of edf planes.
Two special details can be seen at the edf:
First there is an -new to edf - a 6-pol outrunner and second you will find the edf-rotor directly put over the motor bell. The rotor was exceptionally balanced.
With 600 gramms thrust the drive is remarkable.
ALso very well made: the cooling concept for batterie and esc: the cabin has nearly unnoticeable opening in front and the fuselage is equipped with corresponding openings at the end.

Potential:
There is nothing to tune at the unijet. It is build as a trainer and performs this task very well.

Conclusion:
Pichler/TWMs Unijet is an arf-model for the intermediate modelpilot to start into edf-flying whith a bit more skills due to the wood-construction. The more 'novice' should use this plane as second after a 'foamie'. Remarkable: very high degree of manufacturing in traditional wood construction.

Many thanks to

Felix Neubauer for taking fotos and producing the video
Willem Persson for perfect handlaunches.
